Tusculum University Presents ‘Edgar Allan Poe and Other Stories in the Woods’: An Immersive Experience for the Community
Tusculum University is thrilled to announce the return of one of its most anticipated events: “Edgar Allan Poe and Other Stories in the Woods,” set to take place on Friday, October 25, and Saturday, October 26, at the historic Doak House Museum. This unique outdoor theatrical event has captured the hearts of community members across the region and offers an evening of captivating entertainment, social engagement, and an opportunity to support student organizations.
Event Details: Stories, Talent, and Community
“Edgar Allan Poe and Other Stories in the Woods” is a showcase of local talent, featuring five short plays that celebrate both classic and original works. With plays lasting 10-12 minutes each and performed multiple times throughout the evening, audiences will have the chance to experience each one in a charming outdoor setting.
From the eerie atmosphere of “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe to the creative local works such as “Eyes in the Woods: A Mothman Legend” and “STILL,” this event is packed with a variety of narratives that will captivate the imagination of all attendees. Each play is written, adapted, directed, and performed by local artists, alumni, and students.
Steve Schultz, the Director of Tusculum Arts Outreach and one of the event’s key organizers, shares his excitement: “This is a great way to spend an evening outdoors with great entertainment performed by talented actors and created by wonderful writers and directors. We are also thrilled to support our student organizations with their concessions, which will directly fund their activities and enrich their collegiate experience.”
Supporting Tusculum’s Mission and Values
At Tusculum, we believe in the power of the arts to enrich personal lives and inspire civic engagement. This event not only brings the university’s mission to life but also provides students with the active and experiential education that is the hallmark of a Tusculum degree. By attending “Edgar Allan Poe and Other Stories in the Woods,” community members will not only witness remarkable performances but also contribute to the success of student-led fundraising efforts, reinforcing the deep connections between the university and the local region.
In keeping with Tusculum’s Presbyterian heritage, this event emphasizes community, creativity, and personal growth. The involvement of Tusculum’s Young Actors Studio, a program aimed at enhancing literacy and communication skills through the arts, is a testament to the university’s commitment to developing career-ready professionals while fostering a love for the arts among students and young people.
The Historic Doak House Museum: A Perfect Backdrop
Set against the beautiful and historic backdrop of the Doak House Museum, the event takes advantage of one of Tusculum’s most cherished landmarks. Built in 1830 by the Rev. Samuel Witherspoon Doak, co-founder of Tusculum Academy, the museum represents a vital piece of the university’s long history. The Doak House provides the perfect setting for an evening filled with mystery, suspense, and creative storytelling.
Dr. Peter Noll, professor of public history and museum studies, invites guests to enjoy the rich history and natural beauty of the Doak House: “In recent years, we have made a concerted effort to invite people to visit the Doak House and enjoy this beautiful setting. We love to engage with the community because our friends and neighbors are an important part of the university’s success.”
