Advising

Tusculum University is invested in its students and focused on helping them succeed during their studies and graduate as career ready, civically engaged members of their community. To attain these goals, all students are assigned an advisor by the Director of Academic Advising.  Advisors are either faculty or selected staff members. To establish close personal contacts and provide quality academic advising in a spirit of service, each advisor typically works with about 15 advisees.  Advisors inform students about the university’s policies and program requirements, ensuring all graduation requirements are met and students have a positive educational experience.

All students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor regularly and individually.  However, academic advising is more than just registering students for each semester. Advisors are available to help each student to learn and navigate how to use the resources at Tusculum and to find solutions to problems the student might have. The objective of Tusculum’s academic advising is to assist students in the development of meaningful education goals that are consistent with personal interests, values and abilities.

We encourage students to email the director of academic advising with any question at TUAdvising@tusculum.edu.

Tusculum advising is one of the most important things at Tusculum. It gives you a sense of urgency, especially when you know you have people on your side who are willing to give that extra push when you’re physically, mentally and emotionally tired.

There were some times when I thought I was going to give up, but my advisors kept pushing me. Even when I changed my major after realizing sports medicine isn’t what I want to do anymore, my advisor helped me formulate a plan that put me into the best position without putting me back in my credits.

Not only that, but when things aren’t going the way you planned it, the advisors at Tusculum will find another path for you. They will find a way for you to make it. They did for me.

One of the most important things that I found relaxing about my advisor at Tusculum is that I had someone to talk to. In my personal life, when I needed a hug, I got that comfort from my advisors. Tusculum advisors are on a different level. They show you they care, and they mean what they say.

From the first conversation I had with my advisor, Wayne Thomas, he made me feel as though I was capable and valued, and he encouraged to be my best self as a student and otherwise. Each time I leave Wayne’s office, I can keep going, knowing somebody believes in me. Wayne inspires me to well-rounded and confident in my communication/theater abilities. He is a great advisor and mentor to many, including me, at Tusculum University.
